Quiksilver's Kelly Slater wins 10th ASP World Title
28th November 2010

And claims Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico, amassing his 45th Elite Tour victory.

Somewhere, Puerto Rico (November 6, 2010)—Quiksilver’s Kelly Slater made history today, clinching a historic and unprecedented 10th ASP World Title, then going on to win the Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico and showing the crowd the most comprehensive and dominant a performance as the sporting world has ever bore witness to. Kelly is the first surfer to achieve 10 ASP World Titles, an accomplishment spanning two decades of an astounding career during which he has dominated competitive surfing as both the youngest and oldest ASP World Champion.
Today’s historic competition saw Kelly advance out of the Quarterfinals of the Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico over Adriano de Souza. Slater amassed enough points to outstretch remaining contender Jordy Smith, and collect the 2010 ASP World Title. In the Final of today’s event, Slater would go on to post an incredible 18.77 out of a possible 20, securing the event’s second Perfect 10, exhibiting a masterful display of diversity and control in the rippable afternoon conditions.
“I feel relieved, honestly,” says Kelly. “It’s been the most stressful title I’ve ever had, because it’s sort of an unknown place and you know at my age people say ‘you shouldn’t be doing this.’ And all the young guys are getting better and it’s a challenge to believe in yourself and not believe what other people tell you. I know how good Jordy, Dane, Mick, Taj and all those guys are, and it’s a marathon, you know? It’s not one wave, it’s not one maneuver, it’s not one contest. It’s a year-long thing and I know how to focus and it came together and I’m just so relieved.”
“Kelly’s 10th World Title today will be remembered as one of the most important moments in surf history,” said Bob McKnight, CEO of Quiksilver. “We are honored and proud to have been there to witness and support him over his entire, incredible professional career. Congratulations Kelly!”
Channel Islands Surfboards Founder Al Merrick adds, "Im just really proud of Kelly right now. Winning a tenth title is such an incredible feat; but being able to do it on a board that he designed himself is a wonderful accomplishment in itself."
Slater, 38, vaulted into the 2010 season points lead mid-way through this year’s ASP World Tour title race when he won the Hurley Pro at Trestles (Calif.) in September, taking out 27-year-old Bede Durbidge in flawless 6-foot waves. The win marked Kelly’s 4th career title at historic Trestles, the site of his first professional win twenty years earlier.
After Trestles, the ASP World Tour continued on to the Quiksilver Pro France at Les Culs Nus Beach, where Kelly took second place to the reigning ASP World Champion, 29-year-old Australian Mick Fanning. Kelly’s runner-up finish further extended his 2010 tour points lead as he delivered his first perfect 10 score of the season with a ridiculous freefall drop into a barrel during the semifinals.
In mid-October, the tour continued on to Portugal for the Rip Curl Pro, an event that would play a vital role in determining the 2010 World Champion. Slater stormed to another 1st place finish in Portugal, earning a career record 44th Elite Tour victory during some of the highest-performance surfing the world has ever seen. Slater struck stealthily in the final round at epic Supertubos, locking in solid backhand waves in shifting conditions and staving off a late charge from 22-year-old current ASP World #2 South African Jordy Smith. Kelly won his previous ASP World Championships in 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2005, 2006 and 2008. His career victories now include 45 WCT wins and two ESPN X Games gold medals.

Inspired Ingenuity with Havana Club
27th May 2011

This summer, authentic Cuban rum, Havana Club is inviting the nation to demonstrate its inspired ingenuity.

To whet people’s appetites and get the creative juices flowing, Havana Club has commissioned four, diverse artistic talents to create a piece which to them, represents the ‘Inspired Ingenuity’ concept. Sneaker customiser Nash Money has responded to the brief by transforming a pair of all-white Nike Air Force One’s into a fully functional set of 'Sneaker Speakers'. Product designer, Cemal Okten has created ‘Ingredients’, to symbolise Cuba's love of music.  The fully functional headphones are made from a tin can, a coat hanger, a piece of rope and two corks.

Founded by Jurjen Semeijn, Amsterdam-based I Have Pop, known for its multi-dimensional projects, has created a ‘Picnic Table’. For this street art installation they appropriated the fences from a local road works site and constructed a picnic table in the park.  Finally, project curators, Intercity have designed the Inspired Ingenuity logo; using objects from around the studio including a ring-pull, polystyrene packaging, a fuse, a paperclip and a coat-hanger.

The monthly winners and grand winner will be chosen by writer, producer and DJ Charlie Dark, who has made a dynamic impact on the UK poetry and performance scene and is known for pushing the boundaries of imagery and musicality.  Charlie makes regular appearances on the international literature and spoken word circuit, and was a poet coach for the London Teenage Poetry.  He also ran a series of prolific nights at the ICA entitled, Blacktronica. Whilst, recent projects have included consultant for the ‘Bring the Noise’ Festival at Tate Britain featuring Tinie Tempah and others, as well as a collaboration with Chris Ofili for Louis Vuitton.  He is also a founder, creative director and consultant on the Nike RDC Youngers Project.

Charlie Dark says : ‘’When the funds are low, the lowest of the low get creative, forcing technology to do what it's not supposed to do. Remixing culture and spitting it out with its own unique twist. Growing up in South London with Ghanian parents, my childhood was steeped in an appreciation for flipping the script and making things work for you.  Add a mix of Hip Hop culture and you have a fantastic foundation for forcing technology to do things it was never meant to do. My whole career has been steeped in the idea or reinvention; filling the gaps of creativity with my own inventions and ideas. This project shines the spot light on those flipping the script for a whole new era.  It’s innovative, forward thinking and fun’’

Act I – The "DC ALL IN SHOW" – 8pm - 10.30pm For close to two and a half hours, DC will be taking concert-goers on a journey of discovery into its universe. On the programme: FMX show, live vidjing (skate, snow, surf) and an exclusive presentation of Gymkhana 3 in the presence of Ken Block... Hold on tight!

1 – The evening will kick off with a FMX demonstration at the Place des Landais, featuring icons of the genre including Robbie Maddison (Aus), star of the last X Games, Nate Adams (USA) and Adam Jones (USA), all members of Team DC. Not forgetting Charles Pages and other guests, who'll be completing this exceptional line-up of riders.

2 – That will be followed by a "Live Vidjing" show combining the best action video sequences featuring Team DC, with breathtaking sound and lighting effects in a spectacular new audiovisual experience.

3 – The "DC ALL In Show" will round off with the exclusive presentation of GYMKHANA 3* in the presence of KEN BLOCK. Co-founder of the DC brand, a subsidiary of Quiksilver, and a successful WRC rally driver, Ken Block became an Internet sensation with his adventures and skills at the wheel. Acrobatic sequences featuring Ken Block's exploits in his rally car shot straight to the top of the viral video charts, and have clocked up over 70 million views. The forthcoming release of Gymkhana 3 is already generating unprecedented levels of anticipation. In it, Block and his 2011 Ford stretches the laws of inertia to new limits with expertly controlled drifts to the last millimetre. The video has an exclusive soundtrack by The Cool Kids and an aesthetically superb and spectacular production. Not for the faint-hearted!

* Gymkhana: a motor sport discipline practised on surfaces such as car parks or open spaces, which requires the driver to maintain control while pushing his vehicle to the limits and performing stunts including turns, slaloms, 180 and 360° spins, all while avoiding obstacles whilst drifting at maximum speed.

Act II –Orange and Quiksilver present JAMAICA live in concert – 10.30pm

It's the musical highlight of the Quiksilver Pro France 2010. The electro-rock group JAMAICA (formerly Poney Poney) will be performing live on stage at the opening evening at the Place des Landais in Hossegor, on Saturday September 25th. Presented by Orange, the free concert will be held in the open air, and the audience are in for a real treat as the group, made up of Antoine Hilaire and Florent Lyonnet, is one of the biggest names on the music scene currently. The duo are the hottest electro outfit around right now, and are proud of their rock and pop influences and shared heritage with classic French electro acts like Daft Punk and Justice. In fact, Justice's Xavier de Rosnay produced the excellent debut album by Jamaica, ‘No Problem’.

OUTLINES, an iconoclastic group with a sound that’s a blend of soul, jazz and 80s, will be opening for JAMAICA. Having gained critical acclaim with their first opus "Our Lives Are Too Short", the group’s music is distilled into funky baselines, hip-hop beats and house. Their infectiously catchy compositions have been described as "futuristic motown" by none other than the legendary George Clinton.

Rounding off the evening's entertainment is the excellent DJ BREAKBOT (Thibaut Berland), whose funk remixes are already going down a storm on the club scene (and even accompanying the opening titles of Canal+ show "Grand Journal"). He'll get the whole crowd up and moving - nobody is immune to his beats! Recently signed up to the Ed Banger label, DJ Breakbot is the electro revelation of the year.

Wray & Nephew Overproof Rum Links With Warehouse Project
1st October 2011

This autumn welcomes an exciting link-up between Wray & Nephew Overproof Rum and The Warehouse Project (WHP). Wray & Nephew Overproof Rum will be supporting The Warehouse Project for the next three months, as the acclaimed club night series opens its doors. Wray & Nephew Warehouse Project Creative

The collaboration of Wray & Nephew Overproof Rum and WHP brings together two forces which celebrate the independent and underground music scene. Wray & Nephew Overproof rum, introduced to the UK with the Jamaican migration of the 50s and 60s was and still is the rum of choice in Jamaica and is intrinsically linked into the cultural and social traditions of Jamaicans. Jamaica has had many influences on the world but none more so than its music and one of the effects of migration was the impact of Jamaican born music such as Ska, Rocksteady, Reggae and Dub on the UK music scene. Emulating what was happening in Jamaica, the UK streets in the 70s were introduced to the towering speaker boxes and heavy vibrating bass of the Jamaican sound system culture accompanied by Wray & Nephew Overproof Rum brought back from yard (home i.e. Jamaica) as the key rum punch ingredient for the party vibe.

Staying true to its connection with the independent and underground music scene Wray & Nephew Overproof Rum has linked up with the Warehouse Project which is the perfect setting to give people the chance to try Wray & Nephew Overproof rum and add a little flavor from Jamaica to their night.

This season the WHP has guaranteed a stellar line-up, making it a closing party to remember and categorically one of the best club series, the country has ever seen. Confirmed names include Derrick Carter, Skream and Jamie XX.

Events such as Fabric Live, Metropolis and Ape's Birthday, keep it close to the music which has been such a key part of WNO's history in Jamaica and the UK. The WHP showcases the musical evolution of reggae & dub that is so important the keep WNO's heritage alive today.

In Jamaica, Wray & Nephew Overproof rum is not just a drink but a way of life. At WHP, club goers will have the opportunity to experience the unique and distinctive flavour of Jamaica's favourite rum. Served at the bar in Reggae Rum Punch; it's the perfect drink to share with friends or simply to enjoy a Wray n' ting with Ting grapefruit soda or a Ginger Nephew with ginger beer

Wray & Nephew Overproof Rum has been enjoyed since 1825 and is still the white rum of choice for the Jamaican people. At 63% ABV this is not your average white rum... it has a unique flavour, is full of character and uses the purest form of rum production.. It's the ultimate way to create the perfect vibe for an unforgettable night at the WHP.
